World Human Rights Day 2019: Standing Up for Human Rights in Pakistan

On December 10th, Human Rights Focus Pakistan (HRFP) in collaboration with Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) observed International Human Rights Day 2019 with a session for launching a campaign by HRFP with GHRD to “Stand Up for Human Rights, Minorities’ Rights, Women’s Rights and Children’s Rights”.

The event was enjoyed by all with many expressing their thoughts and recommendations for further joint efforts and deeper impacts. The speakers and participants included many individuals from a variety of backgrounds including human rights defenders, women activists, religious representatives and minorities. Speakers urged authorities during the session and street demonstration for the proper implementation of the UN Human Rights charter and resolutions to put an end to discriminatory laws and practices.

Naveed Walter, President of HRFP said that equality should be a top priority for every citizen regardless of religion, race, language, birth, gender, opinion, sect or caste, physical or mental disabilities

Unfortunately, it is young people who represent the majority of the population that are affected by conflicts, exclusions and economic instabilities. This makes it harder for them to be heard by authorities as they currently have limited influence in decision making processes. Naveed Walter said that HRFP, alongside GHRD, will strengthen its network with young people and all stakeholders for advancing and ensuring the effectiveness of HRFP’s Early Warning System, creating a safe and secure atmosphere for their inclusive space to grow and participate.

World Human Rights Day 2019

This years United Nation’s theme was “Youth Standing Up for Human Rights”. On Human Rights Day, the world salutes young people who are pushing for progress and making meaningful change in their communities, countries and around the world. The realisation of human rights for all will only be possible through the inclusion of young people. These are dedicated individuals, voicing their opinions and outrage at the treatment some of the most vulnerable world currently face.

GHRD strives to advance human rights for all through working with youth activists and networks, allowing their voices to be heard and play a key role in much needed change. GHRD and HRFP, alongside these inspirational young people, are committed to the protection and advancement of human rights for all people and will continue this fight together.
