The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a young federation with a diverse community, with 80% being migrant workers or expats from Pakistan to the US. The UAE’s culture is based on Islamic tradition, with domestic law based on Sharia laws. The LGBT+ community faces discrimination on institutional and societal levels, with religious and Sharia interpretations affecting the discourse. In 2017, a transwoman was sentenced to one year in prison for attempting to resemble women. This report will explore the legislation on LGBT issues and its impact on the UAE’s LGBT+ community.
