The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in hate crimes against people of Asian descent, with most cases linked to the virus’s origins in Wuhan, China. Despite recent movements and legislation, thousands of anti-Asian incidents continue worldwide. Since the start of the pandemic in 2020, around 10,000 incidents have been reported. COVID-19 has been seen to facilitate the spread of racism, creating false concerns around national security, fear of foreigners, and general xenophobia. Racism and physical attacks on Asians have spread with the pandemic, with derogatory language in media reports and statements by politicians and social media platforms. Government leaders and senior officials have used the crisis to promote hate crimes, racism, and xenophobia, demonizing refugees and foreigners.
