Gender Based Violence in Costa Rica and the Case of Allison Bonilla Vásquez – ghrd

The gap between written laws and their enforcement in legal systems worldwide is significant, particularly in addressing security issues like violence against women. In some cases, a lack of execution can lead to slow or ineffective police responses to domestic violence calls. In extreme cases, it can increase vulnerability to becoming a murder victim when the legal system fails to protect victims or reprimand aggressors consistently. In Costa Rica, murders of women continue to be persistent, with killing an intimate partner being referred to as a “crime of passion.” Since 2018, femicides have received increased national media attention, with a high-profile case in 2019 highlighting the need for stricter law enforcement against individuals who beat, rape, and kill women.
