The Chinese occupation of Tibet has led to increased surveillance practices targeting religious freedom and expression. Many Tibetans have been detained for expressing devotion to the Dalai Lama, and Chinese authorities have expanded their security system. The “grid” system, erected in 2013, allows authorities to monitor daily life and use high-tech equipment to monitor Tibetans, violating their religious and expression freedoms.
