Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) have historically been male-dominated fields, with women facing barriers in entering these fields due to gender disparities, sexist hiring practices, lack of female role models, and fear of harassment or discrimination. Encouraging more women to join STEM-related teams could improve work quality and career opportunities, potentially reducing the gender pay gap. Science benefits from diversity, and the United Nations data shows women are underrepresented in STEM fields, with only 11% of astronauts and 19% of CEOs and leaders. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is a prominent space agency that champions space exploration, highlighting the need for further progress in advancing gender equality and increasing female representation.
