Europe is a major player in international and regional migration, making a comprehensive and long-term immigration policy a priority. The EU has been working to address the largest migratory flow since the Second World War, with a peak of 1.25 million asylum seekers in 2015. However, the crisis has revealed the shortcomings of the European asylum system, leading to the publication of the European Agenda on Migration and the promotion of a reform of the common European asylum framework. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic brought numerous challenges to migration and asylum, with asylum applications in the EU dropping by 33% in the first ten months of the year. The report will introduce the European Union framework on asylum and refugee status, focusing on the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). It will also address the crisis of the European Agency for the Border and Coast Guard (Frontex) and the EU’s practices of externalizing migrants, specifically the EU-Turkey Deal and the Memorandum of Understanding Between Libya and Italy.
