The Rohingya people in Myanmar have been facing systemic discrimination, violence, and displacement for decades. The predominantly Muslim ethnic group, residing in the Rakhine State, has been denied citizenship and basic human rights, leaving them stateless and vulnerable to abuse. This has led to a brutal cycle of violence, displacement, and human suffering. The Rohingya have been subjected to arbitrary arrests, forced labor, exploitation, and property destruction. Three major waves of violence against the Rohingya occurred in 2012, 2016, and 2017, with the most notorious event occurring in August 2017.
