The Arab states of the Persian Gulf, including the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain, host an estimated 23 million migrant workers, primarily from Africa and Asia. These workers contribute significantly to their economies and development plans. With the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, migrant workers make up almost 80% of the population, responsible for constructing eight new stadiums, hotels, infrastructure improvements, and a new airport. However, the hosting of the World Cup in Qatar has raised concerns about worker rights, with reports of unsafe conditions, long working hours, inadequate services, and overcrowded dormitories. The Kafala system, which operates in all Arab countries, facilitates the exploitation of migrant workers.
