On Friday, October 11th, an important online speakers event took place, highlighting the sensitive and underreported situation of the 57 Bangladeshis detained in the UAE. Our guest speakers, Md. Mostafa Hossain, Quazi Omar Foysal, and Quazi Maruful Alam did an excellent job, and we are very grateful for their participation in the event, as well as the 30 participants who were actively engaged in it.
The speakers during this event were:
Md. Mostafa Hossain commenced the event by proving an analysis of consular access under the Vienna Convention, using the Yadav case to illustrate the legal implications of denying such access, and criticized the UAE for procedural violations and the Bangladesh High Commission for failing to support detained Bangladeshi nationals.
Quazi Omar Foysal continued by emphasizing the importance of Article 36 of the Vienna Convention for protecting Bangladeshi citizens abroad and urged Bangladesh to prioritize invoking this provision in future diplomatic efforts.
Concluding, Quazi Maruful Alam reflected on the difficulties of providing legal aid to detained Bangladeshis and criticized the role of the Bangladeshi consular office, which was hindered by the country’s authoritarian regime at the time.
Thank you to all our 30 guests for joining!
