This webinar explored the atrocities committed, the victims’ experiences, and the international legal response, with a focus on the international crimes that emerged during the July 2024 crisis in Bangladesh.
Legal experts, scholars, and activists delved into the recent unrest in Bangladesh, highlighting the violent suppression of protests, the significant loss of life, and the pressing questions surrounding justice and human rights.
Muktadir Rashid opened with his first-hand account of covering Bangladesh’s 2024 July Revolution, recounting violent crackdowns on students and protesters by security forces, including live ammunition and rubber bullets. He described widespread government censorship, internet shutdowns, and distrust of journalists, underscoring the struggle to document the truth amidst media suppression. He called for an independent press, free from corporate and government influence, as essential to democracy.
Emraan Azad provided a legal perspective, highlighting severe human rights abuses, including killings and enforced disappearances. He proposed reforms to the 1973 International Crimes Tribunal Act for alignment with international standards and recommended establishing a victims’ trust fund, witness protection, and impartial trials. He stressed the need for transparency, justice, and a commitment to truth and reconciliation in future governance.
Participants had the opportunity to engage with speakers, ask questions, and explore ongoing efforts to achieve justice for the victims. This event was crucial for anyone interested in Bangladesh’s evolving situation, international law, and global human rights.
