The End of The Oil
The systematic aggression against the environment and its consequences for the quality of life show the close relationship between human rights and sustainability. For this reason, nowadays sustainable business means companies have to take care of both planet and people.
Land quality is closely linked to a healthy environment and sustainable access to natural resources. So, land degradation can have significant and negative effects on human lives: this is why 74% of the world’s poor lives in degraded environment.
Let’s think about Nigeria. Until 1956, Nigeria has an agricultural economy but then “black gold” was discovered in its subsoil by British Petroleum and Shell. At first, Nigerians glimpsed a light for their development but soon the oil-discovery became a story of geopolitical clashes, dominance and inequality. As such, Nigeria decided to join OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) in order to take back control on its resource. The alliances increased the petroleum price and this caused the first oil shock. Nigeria became the richest country in Africa but rapidly its economy collapsed because of political corruption. From then onwards, Nigeria lives in a state of deterioration. Over 50 years of spillage has created 27000 miles of toxic oil swamps in the Nigerian Delta, lot of water sources are covered by crude oil and life expectancy has decreased at 41 years old which are one of the lowest in the entire world. Now, Nigeria has one of the largest energy access gaps: more or less than half of the population does not have electricity so they cannot live a dignified life.
The story of energy, climate change and development have to be the same from this moment. Those who generated the problem have the duty to help exploited countries by sharing sustainable strategies without looking for profit. Profit will be reached when revitalizing Earth hunger and poverty will end, equality will prevail and economic growth will be sustained, inclusive and sustainable.
