Indigenous peoples or First Nations are the original people who inhabited North America before European colonization. In Canada, 4.9% of the population self-identifies as Indigenous, with 634 First Nation communities representing over 50 Nations and 50 Indigenous languages. Despite numerous laws and policies, the critical condition of Indigenous Canadians is difficult to reconcile due to structural and historical discriminatory treatment, distressing socio-economic conditions, and irrevocable dispossession of their culture.
