Hungary has been consistently violating international law since the election of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in 2010, targeting minorities’ rights and democracy. In 2021, the government targeted migrants, asylum seekers, journalists, political opponents, women, and the LGBT+ community by implementing discriminatory laws and restricting freedom of expression. Most media outlets are under state control, and independent media outlets are threatened daily. The Pegasus spyware scandal has led to classified minutes of parliamentary committee meetings until 2050. The European Union has condemned Hungary’s policies, particularly the fate of migrants, asylum seekers, and the LGBT+ community. Two recently implemented laws have sparked strong reactions from the EU.
