Rangpur, Bangladesh
GHRD Official Press Release.
22nd of November 2024
The forced removal of Sheikh Hasina’s government in Bangladesh has led to a disturbing rise in violence against the Hindu minority, a community that has lived in the region for over 2,000 years. In recent months, reports have surfaced of violent attacks, looting, murders, rapes, and the destruction of Hindu property. These tragic events have made the Hindu community extremely vulnerable in times of political instability and religious discrimination. This violence is often tolerated by the government, which appears to be failing in its duty to protect the rights of minorities.
In response to this increasingly dangerous situation, Hindus across Bangladesh launched a peaceful protest movement on August 9, 2024. These protests demand the immediate protection of their rights and equal treatment under the law. Key demands include the establishment of a special Ministry for Minorities and the recognition of Hindu holidays as national public holidays. The Hindu community has lacked political representation for years and suffers from severe discrimination. Despite the peaceful nature of the demonstrations, the interim government of Bangladesh has responded with force. There are reports of violence against protesters, and at least 89 people have been arrested in Chittagong.
A historic gathering in Rangpur, which attracted over 250,000 participants, highlighted the strength and determination of the Hindu community. This took place despite government restrictions and reports of torture of demonstrators. Authorities have tried to suppress these uprisings, but the Hindu community remains steadfast in their fight for their rights. A larger demonstration in Khulna is scheduled for December 13, continuing the community’s struggle for justice and equality.
The Media: Too Late, Too Little Attention
It is deeply concerning that this serious situation has received minimal attention in the media, especially in the Western press. It seems that the suffering of a minority only becomes ‘newsworthy’ when it is accompanied by large-scale violence, bloodshed, and fatalities. The media only seems to respond when the damage is already irreversible, when the harm has already been done. This is a shocking pattern that reinforces the invisibility of this ongoing oppression. It underscores the tragic reality that media organizations often fail to provide timely reporting, severely hindering the possibility of swift intervention.
There is also a frustrating lack of proactive reporting on the situation, which constitutes a breach of journalistic responsibility. Rather than waiting for the situation to escalate, the media should take responsibility for highlighting the oppression of this minority early on. The failure of the media to report in a timely manner only increases the insecurity of the Hindu community in Bangladesh and complicates effective international intervention.
Tragic Incident in Karimganj Upazila
Another concerning incident recently took place in Mia Bazar, Karimganj Upazila, Kishoreganj. Hridoy Ravidas, a young Hindu man who worked in his own salon, became a victim of violence and abuse by local residents. Hridoy had a romantic relationship with a Muslim girl, which led to tensions within the community. On the day of the incident, several local people confronted Hridoy in his shop, assaulted him, and handed him over to the army on charges related to the relationship. His family was informed and planned to go to the authorities the following day. Tragically, they received the news the next morning that Hridoy had died in custody.
The doctor at President Abdul Hamid Hospital confirmed that Hridoy had been brought in late at night by the army. Upon arrival, he had visible injuries, and blood was flowing from his mouth, indicating severe physical trauma. This incident raises serious questions about the treatment of detainees and the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh. It appears that Hridoy was tortured during his detention, which points to a violation of his human rights.
Call for Justice
Global Human Rights Defence (GHRD) calls for a thorough, independent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Hridoy Ravidas. Authorities must be held accountable for the abuse and death of Hridoy, and those responsible for this tragic incident must be brought to justice. The insecurity and lack of protection for minorities in Bangladesh is no longer acceptable. GHRD calls for immediate justice for Hridoy Ravidas and other minorities suffering from discrimination and violence.
Systematic Vulnerability of Minorities
This incident is a disturbing example of the systemic vulnerability of minorities in Bangladesh. The Hindu community is particularly susceptible to violence and discrimination, but other minority groups also often face persecution and oppression. This requires urgent action from both the national government and the international community to safeguard the rights and safety of minorities.
International Call to Action
GHRD urges national and international organizations, including the United Nations, to put pressure on the government of Bangladesh. It is crucial that the authorities respond quickly and effectively to the demands of the Hindu community and other minorities. The following actions are urgently recommended:
Conclusion
The tragic death of Hridoy Ravidas is a stark example of the ongoing issues facing minorities in Bangladesh. It highlights the urgent need for justice, reforms, and international action. GHRD remains committed to advocating for the rights of minorities and calls for immediate action to prevent these unacceptable tragedies.
GHRD emphasizes that it is not too late for change, but now is the time to send a strong message of solidarity and justice to the victims of this persecution. The international community, media, and governments must work together to protect the rights of minorities before it is too late.
