Dominic Ongwen, born in 1975 in Northern Uganda, was kidnapped by the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in 1987. The group, formed by Joseph Kony to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni, abducted at least 20,000 Ugandan children between 1987 and 2006, displaced over 1.9 million people, and killed tens of thousands of civilians. Ongwen witnessed violence and cruelty at 14 and was forced to burn one of his children alive as punishment. After serving as a child soldier, Ongwen became a key leader of the LRA and committed 61 crimes, including crimes against humanity and war crimes.
